Start Up
Windows(TM) 98/2000/XP
For optimum viewing results, make sure your computer monitor is set
to 640 by 480 pixels desktop area and High Color (16 bit) color
palette.
1. Insert the CD. The CD will normally autostart, if it does not automatically start then follow steps 2-4.
2. Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop.
3. Double-click on your CD-ROM drive.
4. Double-click on the "Startdvb.exe" icon. See "DVB Tips" following
these instructions for help with navigating through the presentation.
5. When finished viewing the presentation, eject the CD.
DVB Tips
Navigate by clicking the "Previous/Back" and "Next/Forward" buttons or by clicking individual screens from the "Directory/Index" page. You can also click on a section tab (i.e. "Student Life") to move directly to the beginning of that section or use the "Directory/Index" tab.
In the "Directory/Index" section, a picture of a speaker identifies pages with
audio clips. A picture of a filmstrip identifies pages with video clips.
Play audio/video clips on individual screens by clicking on the corresponding icon.
AppZap(R) Instructions:
If this CD-ROM contains a digital application to the school (called
an AppZap), access the application by clicking on the "Application"
button on the home screen.
For further help using the AppZap feature, click on "Help" in the
toolbar that opens with the application program.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: "How do I change the screen resolution?"
A: To adjust settings in Windows(TM) 98/2000/XP, do the following:
a. Using the right mouse button, click once on the desktop. This
will bring up a floating menu. From this menu, choose "Properties."
b. A "Display Properties" window will appear. There will be four tabs
at the top. Select the "Settings" tab.
c. On the left half of the window is a menu labeled "Color palette."
Using your mouse, click on this menu and select "High Color
(16 bit)."
d. To the right of the "Color Palette" menu there is a slider labeled
"Desktop area." Using your mouse, drag the slider until it reads
"640 by 480 pixels." (Note: Changing this setting is recommended,
but not required.)
e. Click the "OK" button at the bottom of the page. If prompted,
restart Windows(TM) to allow the new settings to take effect.
Q: "What if my computer does not have QuickTime(TM)?"
A: Follow the instructions for installing QuickTime(TM) for Windows
as follows:
1. If you see this message "Could not initialize QuickTime for
Windows. Would you like to run the QuickTime installer now?"
click "Yes."
2. At the QuickTime Setup screen click "Next."
3. At the Welcome screen click "Next."
4. At the Software License Agreement screen click "Agree."
5. At the Choose Destination screen click "Next."
6. At the "Select Program Folder " screen click "Next."
7. At the "QuickTime Plugin Options" screen click "Next."
8. At the Introduction screen click "Next."
9. If the Connection Speed screen appears click "Next" otherwise go to next step.
10. At the Browser plugin screen click "Next."
11. At the Filetype associations screen click "Finish."
12. At "Finished" screen click "Close."
13. Restart the computer.
If you experience any playback issues, such as a video movie out of
synchronization with the audio, look at the following:
Problems with playback for audio/video files under Windows(TM) are
usually the result of hardware incompatibilities with QuickTime(TM).
Please note that some compatibility issues are the responsibility of
QuickTime(TM) and of the video hardware manufacturer(s). QuickTime(TM)
has a control panel that helps with most of these incompatibilities.
Please do the following:
1. Go to the Windows(TM) "Control Panel."
2. Find the QuickTime(TM) icon and double click on it. If there is
more than one QuickTime(TM) icon present, choose the bright blue
"Q" with the clock hand in it.
3. Now a small window entitled "QuickTime Settings" will open.
4. At top click on the down arrow on the right hand side.
5. You will now see a list of items for QuickTime(TM). Find the
"Sound Out" option and click on it.
6. Click in the box under "Choose a device for playback:" if "DirectSound" is selected change to "waveOut" or "windows preferred device."
7. Next, using the top drop down list, go to "Video Settings."
8. Click on the circle next to "Safe Mode" so that it has a black
dot in it.
9. Close the QuickTime(TM) window and close "Control Panel." Your
settings are now saved.
"QuickTime Authoring Component"
The following message:
"QuickTime for Windows(TM) missing the authoring component required
to run this app. Would you like to run the QuickTime installer now?"
This means that your current installation of QuickTime(TM) is
incomplete. You must uninstall your current version. You can then
run the full installation found on this CD, or you can go to
www.quicktime.com and download a full installation from them.

remedy will be replacement of the diskettes and/or compact disc not
meeting Hobsons' limited warranty and which is returned to Hobsons or
authorized representative with a copy of the receipt.
Hobsons will have no responsibility to replace a disk/disc damaged by
accident, abuse, or misapplication.
